Tips & Tricks

Choosing a font

When selecting a font for your website, it is important to choose a 'web safe' font.  Web safe fonts are fonts that are typically available on all computers - ensuring all your visitors can read your text content.

If you were to choose an unusual font, chances are your visitors would not have that font installed, forcing their browser to substitute a different font which might be completely different in size and appearance.

The following fonts are considered 'web-safe' :

For main/smaller text

  • Verdana
  • Georgia
  • Tahoma
  • Trebuchet

For titles/larger text

  • Arial
  • Times New Roman

Monospace/typewriter

  • Courier New
  • Lucida Console

Other

  • Impact
  • Comic MS
  • Palatino Linotype
  • Lucida Sans

Verdana and Georgia are similar to Arial and Times New Roman, but are designed for screen use and are easier to read at smaller text sizes.

Text in graphics

When adding text to graphics (for example when creating buttons in Antenna's Button Lab) you are no longer limited to web safe fonts, and can select any font you have available on your system.  In this case, you don't need to worry whether your visitors have the font or not, since their web browser will receive the full image with the text ready embedded in the graphic.  Note however that most search engines do not read text in graphics files.
